Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 in 2000) was an American actor and performer whose career spanned more than 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her soft, pleasant singing voice and languid contralto was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955-1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was the recording of "Cry Me a River" that she first introduced in her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her part in Emergency as Nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress , while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began around 1944 with roles in movies. This included roles as the lead female in numerous westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). The singer signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional career in music. She released her final album of studio recordings in 1969, but achieved continuing success playing the lead female character of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) and was co-starring alongside Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
